Charles Appel was born in Brooklyn, New York, but most of his life was spent in East Orange, New Jersey. Appel studied under Francis Luis Mora (1874-1940) and William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) at the New York School of Art, and under Frank Vincent DuMond (1865-1951) at the Art Students League. In 1906, he was elected a member of the Salmagundi Club. He is known for his romantic landscapes and coastal scenes rendered with impressionistic brushwork and tonal palette, and appears to have been strongly influenced by the work of George Inness (1825-1984).
