Born in New York City, he became a noted etcher, painter, and architect. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. As an architect, he designed the Freer Gallery in Washington D.C. He was a part of the Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut, and when the original members formally incorporated in 1914 as the Lyme Art Association, he designed the gallery for their summer exhibitions.
