THOMAS WATSON BALL

(1863-1934)

A New York City native, Thomas Watson Ball attended the Art Students League, where he studied with Beckwith, Mowbray, and Dumond. A some-time general craftsman, he assisted in the decoration of several major churches, including the Chapel of the Intercession in New York City and Trinity Chapel in Buffalo. Later he relocated to Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he became known for dramatic maritime scenes, often featuring cutters and brigs knifing through turbulent waters. Ball also served as the art editor for Harper Brothers from 1894 to 1900. He died in Old Lyme in 1934 and is primarily associated with the Old Lyme Art Colony.
